So i've realized it's been a couple weeks since i've done sketches or anything besides my anatomy stuff in zbrush.. So i after listening to the amazing book by Bobby Chui "The Perfect Bait". Ii'm trying to a do a daily sculpt either right when i wake up or before bed. Here was yesterdays sculpt.. it was a quicke using dynamesh.. but still lots of fun..

some night last week i needed to go to a coffee shop at 2 am to do some sketches and studies.. but instead i decided just sketch monsters faces... fun times.. tried using ballpoint for the sketches then a fine line pen to tighten em up a bit.. and then shade with ball point.. but they are just sketches!

So this a caricature self portrait i did in photoshop.. I would like to try to keep learning more about painting, and do more drawing.. I think this also helps with sculpting so it's a win win really.. Anyways i would like to keep doing this when i can but for now back to sculpting anatomy stuff...

So been a while not really posting much lately..took a bit of a break because i knew what was coming this month.. I've now started a Digital figure sculpting workshop with Scott Eaton. The class is the 2nd addition to the anatomy for artist class i took a while back.. This class is more hands on and and about sculpting the figure in Zbrush.. Here's Wip of my first week assignments.. Torso fragments for both male and female.. Each sculpt was about 3 hours from a simple zsphere model.. and working extremely close with photo reference which was provided for the week's assignment.

So i still have some minor tweaking on my last guy for my workshop then it should be complete. However i really felt like i need to get some sculpting done.. I don't have much time on weekends due to my long crappy work days, but i manage to start this first bust. I'm going to go through the same process i learned in Bryans Workshop and just keep doing stuff like this.. this guy was about 20 -30 mins.. before bed.. He's going to be ape like.. but yeah i'll keep posting progress..

So here's a bit of wahat i've been doing for the last week. I'm taking a concept sculpting workshop with Bryan Wynia. It's pretty awesome!Also lots of fun, and i'm getting to learn from a artist that definitely inspires me. For the class we had to do a couple speedsculpts based of a character description from A H.P.Lovecraft book. (which was my previous post) then make design thumbnail variations in photoshop. Then pick the best working concept and continue to refine and work the speed sculpt into a finished design sculpt.. I'm still working on my refining at this moment but figured i would post something anyways..

So I never really seem to last in mudbox for more then a few minutes sculpting.. i always get frustrated with the brush system and the moving around the sculpt etc.. but i'm always blown away by the work i see come out of the program.. So I 'm trying to give it another go at sculpting using the program. I'd like to keep working on anatomy stuff so i figured i would trying doing some studies in mudbox to get more comfortable with the program and sculpting.. Here's mya screen grab from a hour and a bit into a sculpt i'm doing with reference.. still a huge WIP, but i'm starting to feel a lot better about working in Mudbox.. really want to keep going on this guy...

So i came across a thread on zbrush central that had a artist posted of sculpting a character from a sphere or box... but a whole character to me was something new to try ..so i gave it a quick go for a about an hour.. using a cube i came out with this guy. Had alot fun sculpting this way. This is no way a finished thing.. just a quick sketch.

Been a while since i did anything with this guy. So I went back to zbrush and fix a few areas i've been learning about in my anatomy class.. It's going to be stylzed piece in the end. So just a little work was done..on the torso and face.. Really need to get into the hands and arms... then legs... haha then model my base mesh props ... Damn Tons of work left to do...

Been a little while since my last post. Mainly because i've just started another workshop.. This time it's just Anatomy studies with Scott Eaton. Only two weeks into the class and i feel like i knew nothing about anatomy. It's great to finally getting into understanding everything that makes the body work and move. So i'm kinda taking a break from my wips models. And going to be spending the next few weeks doing studies in photo shop/sketchbook/Zbrush/ and possible some clay sculpts.. I'm trying to burn all this Information into my brain... So gotta keep studying..

Here's two exercises i did today after i finished my assignments.. For the most part just looking the Chest muscles, and abdomen muscles.

Edit: also added a torso speed sculpt from Zbrush :)

Soi' had in my inspiration folder a concept someone did for a Dominance war contest.. I Love the character alot, and i've been wanting to model the guy for a while now.. It's more of a stylized character. Which is something i've never really done... so i figured i would try and do a quick heady study and see how that goes before attempt the full character.. This is still a rough sketch but i kinda like where it's going... so hopefully sometime soon i will start on the full guy.. so be LOADS O FUN!..

Well this guy was a lot of fun. It's was a very quick turn over from the basic speed sculpt warm up doodle to the finished piece probably around 6ish hours. This guys was done with the mentality of being more for a concept art ish type piece..

So I really liked the speed sculpt of this guy.. He felt like he had some character and that it would worth going back and refining the sculpt so more.. So right now is just the start.. Just delet a few of the high sud levels and trying to readjust the forms a bit more..

High End Fantasy Character Workshop.

So not much new with what's going on lately. Just started a Cg Character Workshop at cgtalk.com. The Course is geared around making a full character ready for video game production, using mainly Maya, zbrush, and photoshop. I'm excited to start this workshop, and i hope to learn alot that i will apply to my work and new demo reel, which will hopefully geared more towards the video game industry. This is the concept i think i've decide on hopefully will get as close to it as i can. Lots and Lots of work ahead but i'm defienatly looking for to it.

I did a little bit more sculpting on this guy this morning , but not much. I figured i would try and figure out my direction with the character before i just keep sculpting. So i a quick paint over to figure out some costume ideas.. I'm really liking the Victorian type stuff on this guy.. so i'm probably going to keep heading in that direction.

It's been a while since i've done anything doodle wise in zbrush.. so here's a start to a creature .. about a hour speed sculpt on it while watching the final episode of Dexter! (Which was awesome).. but yeah i' like where this guy is going. so i'm hopefully going to try and spend more time on him later. i think just going try and stay in zbrush for as long as possible..

Back At it Finally..

So heres' some updates on my work.. After moving back to Leduc from Van. Sadly I still haven't gotten a job in the 3d Industry.. So back to the oilfield i go.. Financially i could no longer afford to live in Van if i was not working in the industry so i came back to what i was doing before i went to school.. It's kinda heart breaking feeling, but i'm determined to keep progressing my skills in 3d so in the near future i will have more to offer Companies. So having said that.. after getting back home and settled in and back to the working world.. I've decided i'm going to work on my previous project.. the Jason sculpt i posted a few months ago. Not much has change since my first post.. but i have' been trying to get weekly stuff done on this guy..

Last week i was finally able to retopo my high res Zbrush geo. I learned a lot doing the guy as his face is Asymmetrical so i retopo-ed the whole face poly by poly. It seemed to be pretty balance in the end also made all my eye/mouth.nose/ bags..and make a more production animation friendly mesh.So now it's on to doing some minor tweaks. Uvs.. and a re-projecting the new topology on the high-res zbrush mesh..And continue sculpting .. .. I'm going to keep trying to post weekly updates to hopefully show some progress..

so right now.. i'm starting to plan out and figure out some stuff for my next personal project which will be a monster character of some sorts. But right now i'm gathering references and doing some drawing studies for the character. After gathering some gorilla references i decided to try a quick speed sculpt from a sphere.. Fun times, the whole thing took maybe 90 mins.. not trying to really do a finished piece, more of just a study to figure out some issues i was having..

Hey here's a concept for a creature type vampire guy. My main focus was just to use a different workflow, and try to explore new ways of getting to the end result. I boxed modeled a quick head in maya, drew over a screen grab in photoshop, then added textures from photos, and painted in some other details. It was a fun learning experience and will definitely be doing this again.
